Moorings on the South Coast
Three CSSA clubs provide permanent moorings of various types for yachts owned solely or jointly by members of the CSSA.
lHooe Point Sailing Club - Plymouth Sound

There are only a few swinging moorings on buoys adjacent to the club site in the Cattewater at the North Eastern corner of Plymouth Sound. Most of these dry or are shallow at lowest tides, so are only suitable for bilge keeled yachts or motor cruisers of less than 30ft (9.15m) overall, but all are well sheltered from the sea. There are also a few berths alongside the club pontoon, and space ashore in the club grounds for winter storage. Launching is down a slipway by tractor or winch. There is a waiting list for all types of mooring.
For more information and charges please contact Tom Aston see HPSC Club page for details.

Netley Cliff Sailing Club - Southampton Water
Netleycliff02

There are a few swinging moorings on buoys adjacent to the club site at Netley on the East side of Southampton Water. Most of these have between three and six feet of water at lowest tides, so are only suitable for small sailing cruisers of less than 30ft (9.15m) overall. The moorings are exposed to the wash of ferry and commercial traffic from Southampton Port There is also space ashore in the club grounds for winter storage. Launching is by winch or boatlift down a slipway.
For more information and charges please contact the NCSC Moorings Officer, Paul Davies 02380 263805.

Portsmouth Offshore Group - Portsmouth Harbour
There are four mooring areas, all in Portsmouth Harbour.
1 Weevil Lake Pontoons:
pogweevil02

There are some 160 pontoon berths for boats up to 10.97 (36ft) LOA dredged to 2 metres below CD adjacent to the club yard in Weevil Lane with direct shore access. These are the most desirable moorings and the wait for larger yachts could be several years. The turnover is about ten a year and at present there are some 80 members waiting for a mooring here.

2 Burrow Island:
pogburrowisland02

There are swinging drying moorings suitable for boats up to 8.53m (28ft.) LOA that can take the ground. There are six deep water places close to the club yard capable of taking boats up to 9.75m (32ft.) which only become available as members from these get "promoted" to the pontoons.

3 Haslar Pontoons:

There are six berths close to the harbour entrance alongside pontoons between piles out in Haslar Creek below Haslar Bridge, and access is only by dinghy. These are suitable for boats up to 10.46m (34ft.) LOA. Turnover is similar to the Burrow Island deep area mentioned above.

4 Wicor Reach:

The pile moorings at Wicor 3 miles up the Fareham Channel are suitable for boats from 7.62 to 15.24m (25 to 50ft) and some are shallow. The deeper water longer berths are popular; the shorter shallow ones have spaces at present. Controlled access is by your own tender kept in the Royal Naval Aircraft Yard.

Overall:

In summary, if you have a 10.97m (36ft) fin keel boat or want a pontoon mooring it will be a long wait, whereas the owner of a 7.92 m (26ft) bilge keeler who is happy with a drying mooring and access by dinghy will be satisfied sooner. We do not use a waiting list but work instead on the current "Blue (annual application) form" and POG membership number. There is no penalty if you turn down the offer of a mooring (for whatever reason); keep trying until we can offer you one that suits you - you will gain seniority each year if you maintain your group membership.

This does mean that although you may easily get a mooring for a small boat, you cannot expect to change to a larger or deeper one and get a mooring for it ahead of someone with a lower Group membership number who is waiting for such a mooring. If you are anticipating a boat upgrade, you should let us know, and we will try to assess your prospects.

POG mooring charges vary from time to time but as the club, does not employ permanent staff and most work is done by member volunteers, charges are set to cover current and future expenditure only, are correspondingly less than commercial organisations.

Once you have paid your CSSC/CSSA subscriptions, the POG annual subscription is £15.00, which includes monthly newsletters. There is a joining fee is £15.00. There is a separate fee to cover a deposit for a site key.

For further information on moorings please contact Derek Gant, POG Moorings Officer 0754 0830 446.
